Donny got some work. It has been sometime since Donny has done antthing but get rolled around the office. Moved from one spot to the other out of the way of daily work. He has been a struggle in my head about if I make the proporations correct. Hesitant because of a lack of belief in my ability to make a human figure look like I see it and how I want Donny to appear. He is my first try at anything this large or complex. I am self taught , I have self doubt. I needed to weld ,I needed to create. Im happy with the progress. I like the shape. One more hurdle cleared. I got an email from the El Paseo art director for the sculpture entry of 2015/16. That would be a great start for Donny 2 years in the desert would be great for his Patina.
New flowers and wall sculpture for the november artwalk. Including a new piece finished the morning before hanging. #itscomplicated is my newest block sculpture. Color and texture with, glass added for whimsy. Come see all the fun at the artwalk November 2 7 to 10 pm in downtown santa ana 207 north Broadway. Hope to see you.
Donny got some work, its been some time since I’ve worked on the Don. I had some time last week and an hour or so this morning. I’ve had two dilemma’s, time is always a problem lately and a bit of fear in my ability to make the upper torso. My first life size human sculpture, first human figure of any kind. I have had some searching and studying to get over my fears. There more parts to study for, but the torso is going to work.
So the first Saturday artwalk in santa ana is Oct 5 from 7 to 10 . I changed out the art, left La Tortuga and added three pieces. (5 total but three are a piece together) to hang on the wall. I left intertwined and added three of the glass flowers for a total of ten pieces for this artwalk. I also choose pieces that are less expensive (Tortuga and Intertwined aside) so maybe a better chance to find homes for my art. Hopefully there will be folks looking for that special gift for christmas. Thank you for reading my rants.
The kiln experiments have been a blast. Some are spectacular and some are spectacular fails but all are a learning chance. Glass is such a change from the metal and wood that I’m used to as a medium. I can bend, sand and fill wood and metal. They are easily changed if i don’t like the results. Not the case with the glass, screw up and no fixing that just new parts for other projects or extra for melting blobs. The flowers are beautiful. I bought a mold to try (I’m now making my own variations from recycled metal) and could not be more pleased with the end product. Pleased to say i was invited to a show for my glass, wood and metal mix art and have 12 pieces on display at Bear Street Gallery in Santa Ana California. I will send invites for the show opening.
Have not updated often enough. Life has been busy, have been accepted at some shows, have enter some more shows, and the trials of life have come into play. All that aside life is good. Donny gets more work as often as i can so stay posted for more photos and the next phase of Donny, his upper half will start soon.
I have been neglecting the blog. The defender of the arts, My biggest work to date, is growing into a fabulous piece.
Donny, as i call him for short, is an idea i have had for many years. The arts are being taken from us, removed from schools because of funding. Pushed to the side in order that children learn the three Rs. We need the basic schooling to get through life, but what kind of life do we live with out the beauty of a sculpture or the joy of a symphony. Art is a basic human need, the need to create and the need to have or lives enriched by beauty. Donny is in motion, an active defender a champion seeking to achieve victory, not to stoically watch over the old but bring all art to a renewed victory in the hearts of people.
Donny is a collection of parts from a elevator i removed from a job, Iron i collected from the dumpsters around my office, and a ton of wire salvaged from commercial job-site dumpsters thanks to Jimmy Hanes (super-duper door guy) I will continue to photo Donny and post updates. I’m also trying to find him a home in public place if anyone can help with that idea.
